I recently discovered that I could use Garageband and a microphone to record my piano improvisation which makes things a hell of a lot easier. So I'm determined to start uploading stuff to Youtube again.
I'm not so much interested in having people listen to my improvisation as I am having them rewriting it; I wish there was a better format I could share it in.
Music is something to be shared, not owned. It's a conversation. And by binding the lyrics and melodies in copyright laws, we silence a language as old as culture. It's insane to claim ownership over combination of words and notes, over sound and noise. You do not own sound, you just create it.
I feel like we should be moving away from the compartmentalization of music with Web 2.0. Sure there was a time when people figured you could trap sound inside of records, tapes, and CD's and then own them. And for a while, it was profitable to sell sound in this way. But the medium has changed. Music needs to be reclaimed.
Challenging copyright is reclaiming music. Remixing is reclaiming music. And joining in the conversation, uploading your own amateur piano playing, is reclaiming music.
